Nintendo Plans To Join The Metaverse; Interested In NFTs

This past Monday, at the annual Digital Content Expo in Japan, Shuntaro Furukawa, President of Nintendo Co., Ltd., announced that they want to support blockchain technology and its most popular construct – non-fungible tokens (NFT) – as a means of furthering their foray into digital entertainment.

According to Mr. Furukawa: “We feel this is an extremely large potential…” He goes on to say: “… it’s like giving each player a ticket for a railroad train… and let them take different routes and travel around.” […] Clearly, this is supplemented by their recent release of the Monopoly game on the Ethereum mainnet.

According to Daniel Perez, writing in ETHNews, Nintendo stated that “it will continue experimenting with games which utilize blockchain technologies.” Additionally, according to Mr. Furukawa: “To cite one example, there are some people using NFTs now for trading communities.”

Nintendo’s president Shuntaro Furukawa  said at a press conference over the weekend that he wants Nintendo to use its new Blockchain platform as an infrastructure for getting more young people involved with playing video games. Blockchain is known for being used in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Etherum but Furukawa wants it to be used in gaming platforms too.

Nintendo has been making a lot of moves into the cryptocurrency and blockchain world lately. The company announced at DICE 2018 that it will be using blockchain technology as an infrastructure for creating new entertainment content, potentially including video games. Nintendo has also recently released Monopoly on the Ethereum mainnet which is one of the first times a mainstream gaming company was willing to use decentralized digital assets in any way, shape or form.

“We feel this is an extremely large potential,” he said about non fungible tokens (NFTs).   He went on to say: “It’s like giving each player a ticket for a railroad train … and let them take different routes and travel around.”

By supporting NFTs through its own Blockchain platform, Nintendo is allowing its young user base to have even more freedom when it comes to how they interact with the digital world.

According to Perez, Furukawa said he would continue experimenting with games using Blockchain technology, mentioning non fungible tokens (NFTs) as an example of what could be used. Furukawa also added that NFTs can help players own their game content without relying on publishers or platform holders.
